As someone who is trying to learn how to play the cello, it is very inspiring for me to see an artist like Kate, who not only master the cello, but also looping and singing. Kate Wakefield’s poetic melancholy lyrics, engaging cello, and her emotive singing are all showcased on Unkind. I love listening to her vocal range and singing style. Combined with lyrics that tell stories, share emotions..... In addition I highly recommend seeing her perform live, both solo and with her rock band Lung. Standout tracks on this album include Happiness, the title track, When I Was, Combination, Winterreise, and Two Trees.

This might be their best album, and that's really saying something. The songs shift seamlessly from crushing to angelic, and there are enough other dynamics and subtleties at play to keep each song interesting. It's my favorite album of 2020, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
